Citizen Tree Project

Who We Are:

We are a group of Portland State faculty and students who are developing a grass roots project that will monitor Portland area trees through community outreach.

Our Goals:

  1. 1.• Develop a network of citizen scientists who will participate in long-term monitoring of the impact of climate on Portland trees.

  2. 2.• Increase public knowledge and help collect baseline data that can be used to reduce Portland’s carbon footprint and raise awareness about the causes and effects of climate change.

How you can help:

We are looking for people who are interested in the environment and contributing to our knowledge about tree growth in Portland.  Specifically, we need volunteers who have either a Big Leaf Maple of a Douglas Fir tree (less than 6 feet around) on their property. We hope to monitor individual trees for at least 5 years, so we are looking for a long-term commitment to the project. We will install a dendrometer band (see how-to) on your tree and ask you to send us your measurement on a monthly basis on this website, via the Submit Data page or e-mail. This is a great opportunity to get involved with your community and participate in a study that can impact our environment.
